From the Top of Europe to Everest Base Camp & 31st Dec — My Epic 2024

Standing at Everest Base Camp on December 31st, watching the last sunset of the year paint the Himalayas in golden hues — this is how 2024 ended. From Jungfraujoch to 5,400 m, it was nothing short of extraordinary.

As I stood at Everest Base Camp on December 31st, 2024, watching the last sunset of the year paint the Himalayas in golden hues, I couldn't help but reflect on the incredible journey that brought me here. From reaching Jungfrau — top of Europe — earlier in the year, to now standing at the base camp of the world's highest peak Mt. Everest at 5,400 meters, 2024 has been nothing short of extraordinary.

The Power of Diverse Connections

One of the most remarkable aspects of this journey was our group of 22 individuals, each bringing their unique professional background to the trail. From geologists who could read the mountain's story in its rocks to chartered accountants, strategy consultants, and business owners — our diverse careers couldn't have been more different. Yet, we were united by a common goal: reaching Everest Base Camp. This diversity proved to be our strength, as we shared perspectives, problem-solving approaches, and created lasting friendships that extended far beyond the mountains.

The Journey to the Basecamp of Giants

Our trek began on December 23rd from Kathmandu, spanning 14 days and covering an impressive 158.68 kilometers round trip. While most choose to visit during peak season, our off-season adventure offered a unique perspective of the Himalayas. Yes, the temperatures plummeted below −35°C, but the relative solitude on the trails made every step more meaningful.

Highlights Along the Way

The iconic Hillary Bridge stands as a testament to human determination. Crossing it was both thrilling and humbling, knowing the countless adventurers who had taken these same steps before me. Lukla — world's most dangerous airport. Namche Bazaar — the gateway to Everest — offered more than just acclimatisation; its museum provided fascinating insights into Sherpa culture and mountaineering history.

One of my most memorable experiences was at the world's highest café at 4,410 meters. Sipping hot coffee while surrounded by towering peaks offered a surreal moment of reflection. We even watched the "Everest" movie during our trek — talk about perfect timing for motivation!

Paying Respects

The trek took on a more somber note as we passed the memorials of Rob Hall and Scott Fischer near Lobuche. These reminders of the mountain's power and unpredictability put our own journey into perspective. While we were "only" heading to base camp, the respect for the mountain and those who've attempted its summit grew with every step.

Physical and Mental Challenge

As we gained altitude, our oxygen levels gradually dropped, but careful acclimatisation and steady pacing helped us maintain safe levels throughout the trek. The human body's ability to adapt never ceases to amaze me — by the time we reached base camp, we were moving comfortably at altitudes where oxygen is less than half of what's available at sea level.

Looking Back

This journey wasn't just about reaching Everest Base Camp — it was about pushing boundaries, embracing challenges, and gaining a new perspective on what's possible. From the warmth of Kathmandu to the frost-laden paths of the Khumbu region, every step added to a story I'll cherish forever.

As we begin 2025, I'm grateful for the mountains that teach us humility, the challenges that make us stronger, and the journeys that transform us. Here's to more adventures and new heights in the year ahead!

Last but not the least — thanks to our trek lead Mingmar Dai and his team. Without their support, this trek's success would not have been possible. Thank you.

Switzerland: A Dream Come True

Ever since school days, Switzerland had been on the bucket list — expensive, distant, seemingly impossible. Then the universe conspired. And it turned out to be even better than the movies.

Ever since my school days, Switzerland had been on my bucket list, but I never knew how I was going to make it happen. The main reasons, of course, were that it's an expensive country, coupled with a demanding work life and the responsibilities that come with being from a middle-class family. But once you believe in something, the universe conspires to make it happen — and that's exactly what I felt to be true.

Those images of snow-covered mountains from movies, serene lakes, and dreamy towns always made me wonder if a place could really look like that. Now, having seen it with my own eyes, I can confidently say — it's even better! I never thought I'd actually visit it, let alone so soon!

Zurich — Where the Adventure Began

The adventure began in Zurich, where I quickly realised Swiss punctuality isn't a myth. I almost missed my train because I was taking a leisurely stroll with my friend through the station. Lesson learned: Swiss trains wait for no one, not even starry-eyed tourists like me! I spent my time around the Zurich lake and then took another train for Thun.

Thun — A Charming Surprise

What an experience that was in Thun! Nestled between majestic peaks and a sparkling lake, this charming town is already a sight to behold. But my visit was made extra special because I was lucky enough to catch the annual Light and Music Festival — and we had a wonderful, helpful Airbnb host who made us feel right at home.

Interlaken, Grindelwald & the Top of Europe

Next, I headed to Interlaken and Grindelwald, gateways to the breathtaking Jungfrau region — Top of Europe. The train ride to the Jungfrau Observatory was nothing short of magical. Imagine towering peaks, endless stretches of snow, and views that make you forget to breathe. Standing on the observation deck, I felt like I was on top of the world — literally.

Harder Kulm — My Favourite Spot

But Harder Kulm might have been my favourite spot. Overlooking Interlaken, it offers a view so surreal it feels like it was painted by the universe itself. I stood there for what felt like hours, just soaking in the beauty and marvelling at how nature can be so perfect.

Lucerne — The Perfect Ending

Finally, my journey ended in Lucerne, a city that somehow balances old-world charm with modern elegance. I took a boat ride on the lake, sipped a local brew, and watched the cityscape glow in the golden hour — it was the perfect way to wrap up my Swiss adventure.

Now, I know places in India are often compared to Switzerland. And if anything comes close, it's probably Gulmarg — a beautiful gem in its own right. But let's be real: there's only one Switzerland, and nothing else truly compares.

"If you've ever dreamed of visiting, don't wait. Go. It's more than just a scenic destination — it's a place that makes you pause, reflect, and fall in love with the world all over again."
